In Hokkaido, Samani is my home. It’s a wonderful thing to drive down the streets in the evening and recognize every kid who is riding home on their bike, and to have a constant stream of people in cars honking and waving when I’m out running. I live in a public servants’ apartment building just a minute’s walk from the town hall and 10 seconds from the train station, the rooms much bigger, newer, and cleaner than typical Japanese apartments. Even though the building is labeled the “dokushin” (meaning “unmarried”) place, actually both married couples and even families live there. And that’s where today’s story comes from.
札幌はもちろん楽しいけど、様似はマイホームです。様似にいるたいていの人は顔見知りで、みんなは私にすごく親切です！！私は公民館の後ろ、駅の隣の公務員マンションに住んでいて、部屋は普通の部屋よりも広くて、新しくて、綺麗です！独身のマンションだけど、カップルも、家族で住んでいる人もいます。今日のお話は、そこから始まります。
This is my garden. Actually, it’s just a small planter in front of my house, but I’ve taken a lot of joy this season from tending to my 10 or so flowering plants in its 3 ft by 2 ft frame.
これは私の庭です。実は，家の前の小さいなプランターで、今年初めて花を植えて、とても楽しんでいます。
And these are 
my favored Gazanias, my pick of the the litter, but also my problem children. At the time I bought them, I was strongly attracted to their vibrant colors and their seemingly strong build. After I planted them, however, despite their affinity for the sunlight their flowers remained stubbornly shut every time that I went to check on them after work. It was one day by chance that I was home for lunch that I discovered their mysterious ways: they bloom only at high noon and slightly after that on days with lots of sunshine. But being from Africa they required so little water that on rainy days, or any other time in fact, they snap their flowers shut. At that point I was extremely relived that I wasn’t a Gazania murderer. However, I was not the only person to notice their stubborn ways.
それから、私の大好きな花、これらはアフリカから来たガザニアです！買った時に「すごく明るくてかわいい！！」とつよく思い、気に入ったけど、植えてから問題がありました。花屋さんは「ガザニアにたくさん太陽が必要だ。それと、お水はあまりあげなくてもいい」と教えてくれました。しかし、毎日仕事が終わる時（４時頃）庭をチェックすると、晴れっているのに、いつもガザニアの花弁は閉まっていました！だけど、一度偶然、家に昼ご飯を食べに帰ってきて、花弁が開いていたのを見て、やっと分かりました。きっと晴れている日に咲いて、夕方日が沈んでから閉じるのでしょう。それが分かって、安心しました！でも、もう一人の方はガザニアさんを心配していました。。。
THIS is my neighbor girl, Ririka. At only 3 years, she is a force to be reckoned with. At less than 2 years old when I first chanced across her outside my door, I learned immediately she is not a girl that accepts the typical “good day” and neighborly wave for an answer; she wants to TALK. Once she sees you, so will barely let you get away, asking about what you’re doing, showing you her newest shoes, pointing out where Mr. Snail lives etc etc etc. Only with the kind help of her parents well educated in distraction can you eventually get away. Since I admire Riri’s spunk, I decided to give her a job.
The red elephant in the picture is a little watering can I bought for Riri to “help” me by watering the flowers whenever she likes. The amount is so small that even if she filled it 1-2 times every day it would not hurt anything. However, one day I went out and, to my surprise, found Riri pouring an inordinate share of water right on top of my Gazanias! “They aren’t blooming,” she reasoned out loud, “they must need more water.” Of course! For a toddler, brilliant logic! A flower that isn’t flowering must need more water. While incredibility impressed at her ability to reason beyond her years, I feared that that my beloved African flowers would soon drown, so I gently told her “Um, these flowers don’t really like water, hun…” and quickly redirected her stream to the less particular plants. But she is one smart cookie, don’t you think?!
こちらは隣のりりかちゃん。めちゃめんこい３歳女の子で、喋ることが大好きです。私を見たら、りりちゃんは「どこに行きますか？何をしていますか？見て！くつがアンパンマン！ここにカタツムリさんがすんでいますよ！」って、会話をして、逃げられないです。私はりりちゃんがかわいくてスゴイと思ったので、彼女に大切な仕事を任せました。
赤い象さんのじょうろをプランターに置いておいて、りりちゃんに「いつでも花たちにお水をあげて」、とお願いしました。でも、この間仕事から帰った時、家の前で、りりちゃんを見て、彼女はうちのガザニアにたくさん！たくさん！水を注いでいました！「この花は、咲いていないから、きっと喉が乾いている！」と、りりちゃんは説明しました。 そうでしょう？！賢いでしょう？！咲いていない花は、もちろん水を飲みたい！それを理解して、りりちゃんはすごく頭がいいと思いました。でも、ガザニアの生活は違って、りりちゃんちょっと間違いです。そうすると、ガザニアが水浸しになちゃう！それで私は「あのう、そのお花さんは水はあまり好きじゃないよ」って、やさしく止めさせました。だけど、りりちゃんは本当によく知っていますよね～。
This past weekend, I was SUPPOSED to be at HEC (Hokkaido English Challenge) with 3 of my students who won the chance to go. But the day before we planned to leave, a bear appeared at the campsite, which was immediately shut down. It happened on such short of notice that, without a back-up plan, we reluctantly had to cancel camp this year. I was especially disappointed because for the 2nd year running I was to be the camp DJ, and had spent weeks carefully planning a playlist that combined current popular music in the English speaking world with J-pop that the students already know and love, as well as songs that have easy dance steps that the students can learn. Since I have no other venue to share what I put together, I’m going to post it up here in case anyone is interested. You will notice that Lady Gaga as well as girl-bands from Korea made the strongest showing this year. Also take into consideration that the audience is Junior High school students… needless to say Rihanna’s S&M got the ax.

先週末、北海道の英語のチャレンジ（HEC)キャンプに３人のテストに合格した中学生と行くつもりだったけど、砂川のキャンプ場で熊さんが出て、中止になってしまいました！私は２度目のデイージェーをすることになっていたので、すごく残念でした！何時間もインターネットで調べたり、何回も浦川のTSUTAYAへ借りに行ってきたりから、とてもがっかりしました。だから、きみへ、ここにリストをアップするので、興味があったら、曲を調べてみてくださいね。入っているのは、最近日本とアメリカで人気がある歌と、ダンスし易い曲、それからみなさんのリクエスト。今年は、特に レディ・ガガと韓国から来た女性グループが良く出ています。お客さんは若い生徒たちだから、あまりセクシーすぎない曲を選びました。^^*
